1940 - Palestine and the World of Tomorrow

BY ERIC MENDELSOHN, FRIB A

"It seems no coincidence, but quite natural, that the architect, who is used to understanding a building as the sum of all the requirements of his time, is among the first to recognize the change in the structure of the world the world because he understands the structural

element as his personal privilege."

“….Once Palestine was the bridge between the northern and southern shores of the Mediterranean and the route for expeditions of foreign but artistically mature nations. Today, after 2000 years, Palestine is the gateway to the Semitic world and an important point on the air route between Europe and the Far East. Formerly the image of uncreative provincial art, Palestine now symbolizes the link between the most modern civilization and ancient culture. It is the place where intellect and vision, matter and spirit meet. In the shaping of this link, Arabs and Jews, both members of the Semitic family, should be equally interested. On its solution depends the fate of Palestine to become a part of the New World which will replace the past world. Genesis repeats itself.”

Jerusalem, February 1940.
